The 14th China National Model United Nations Conference Held in Zhejiang University
On 27-29 October 2017, the 14th China National Model United Nations Conference, hosted by UNA-China and organized by Zhejiang University, was successfully held in Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. Ambassador Lu Shumin, President of UNA-China, Mr. Luo Jianhong, Vice President of Zhejiang University, and Ambassador Xie Bohua delivered speeches on the opening ceremony. Mr António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN and UN Department of Public Information sent congratulatory video and letter respectively to the Conference.
President Lu Shumin said that the successful conclusion of the 19th National Congress of the CPC brings special significance to the MUN Conference. As General Secretary Xi Jinping noted in his report, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era. It will be an era not only for all the Chinese people to strive with one heart and soul to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation but also one which sees China moving closer to the center stage of the world and making greater contributions to mankind. The UNA-China will continue to disseminate UN knowledge, study on UN issues and participate in UN activities, and cultivate more talents for China’s further participation in global governance. He highly appreciated the active role that CNMUN has been playing over the years in helping young students expand global vision and build capacity. He encouraged students to remember the original aspiration, keep the mission in mind and work hard so as to contribute to the construction of a better country and the shared future for mankind.
Vice President Luo Jianhong expressed his warm welcome to all the guests, faculty advisors and students. He said that Zhejiang University has long endeavored to build itself into a world-class University and nurture leaders of tomorrow with international vision and spirit of innovation. Zhejiang University launched Global Engagement Program (GEP) in 2015, aiming to cultivate talents with international vision that could better speak of China’s voice, put forward China’s idea and contribute China’s wisdom to the world. The MUN, as a platform for students to enhance ability, gain knowledge on international affairs and make friendship, will help students better understand historic opportunities for China and responsibilities they are shouldering. He encouraged delegates to show Chinese students’ aspiration to the world and strive for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation in the future.
A record high of more than 600 faculty advisors and students from 205 universities and colleges across the country participated in this year’s CNMUN Conference. The Conference set up 6 model UN Committees including 5 English Committees and 1 Committee of Chinese language, plus a main press center, discussing issues such as Internet Freedom & Regulations, Peace-keeping & Peace-building, International Cooperation on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Counter-terrorism & Protection of Human Rights, Climate Change & the Right to Development, and Women Empowerment and Gender Equality. 12 judges, including retired diplomats, UN officials and scholars made comments on participants’ performances.
Over 80 delegates were awarded the Best Delegations, Outstanding Delegations, Honorable Mentions, Best Papers, Best Policy Capability and Best Speakers, Best Faculty Advisors and Best Organization.
The CNMUN Conference is an annual event hosted by the UNA China since 2004. It is the most influential Model UN Conference in China.
