On September 29, Ms. Hu Wenli, Vice-President and Director-General of the United Nations Association of China, attended the International Symposium on Multilateralism, Solidarity and Sustainable Development: The United Nations at 80. She delivered a keynote speech in Panel Discussion 5: United Nations at its next 80th anniversary – a future-facing multilateral system.

In her speech, Ms. Hu Wenli emphasized that facing complex and severe global challenges, countries should adhere to true multilateralism and firmly safeguard the international system with the UN at its core. Recently, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), putting forward a Chinese solution to further strengthen and improve global governance. The GGI aligns with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, follows the fundamental approach of extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefits in global governance, and is committed to promoting a more just and equitable global governance system. It is hoped that all parties will work together to implement the GGI and make greater contributions to world peace and development.

This seminar was co-hosted by the United Nations in China and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies. Senior UN officials, Chinese government officials, experts and scholars, youth, and civil society representatives discussed partnerships and financing for development, heightened global climate action, AI for Good, youth for the Future, and United Nations at its next 80th anniversary. Participants believed that it is essential to firmly uphold the status and authority of the UN, gather greater collective strength to address global challenges, and jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity.
